Holly Bank Wood

Holly Bank Wood was part The Big Wood that was due south Abbey Wood and Lilleshall House. In the 1917 sale, Holly Bank Wood and the adjacent Rough Park were together as Lot 247 with a total area of 149.680 acres. On the Ordnance Survey map revised in 1901, the two woods have a similar total area of 148.096 acres, and so we are using the OS area figure for Holly Bank Wood of 54.266 acres. The other woods in The Big Wood were Brickkiln Plantation, Thompson’s Plantation, Millington’s Coppice, Lodge Wood, Middle Wood, Far Wood, Shooting House Wood, and Cooper’s Coppice.

In 1891, Forbes’ survey described Holly Bank Wood:

This has been cleared within the last few years, and the ground replanted with Larch, Corsican Pine, hardwoods, etc which are in a very thriving condition.

Ordnance Survey 25 inches to the mile. Shropshire XXXVII.5, revised 1901. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland.
