Rough Park

Rough Park was part The Big Wood that was due south Abbey Wood and Lilleshall House. In the 1917 sale, Rough Park and the adjacent Holly Bank Wood were together as Lot 247 with a total area of 149.680 acres. On the Ordnance Survey map revised in 1901, the two woods have a similar total area of 148.096 acres, and so we are using the OS area figure for Rough Park of 93.830 acres. The other woods in The Big Wood were Brickkiln Plantation, Thompson’s Plantation, Millington’s Coppice, Lodge Wood, Middle Wood, Far Wood, Shooting House Wood, and Cooper’s Coppice.

In 1891, Forbes’ survey described Rough Park:

“About twelve acres at the lower end have been recently cleared and replanted. The remainder consists of old Oak, Elm, Ash, etc all of which is ripe and requires cutting. The greater part of the underwood is also fit to be cut.”

On the west side of Rough Park was Big Wood Cottage, a pair of semidetached houses provided by the estate to gamekeepers and woodmen.
